Stripe Out 2023

25 August 2023, vs. St. James Academy (4-3 in OT)
Game 1: (1-0-0)

Huge shoutout to Varsity Assistant Coach and Advancement Director, Tim Zande, as he took over the reigns to the planning and execution of our Opening Match and its big-time fundraiser from BWhite. What an event!

This event is already special in that it honors Perter Clevinger and Aaron Cobb two former Saint Thomas Aquinas soccer greats, but tonight's charity portion of the match raises monies for charities in the name of John Whigham (I Am ALS), the head of a great Saint Thomas Aquinas soccer family and Mark Huppe, a former Saint Thomas Aquinas teacher and coach, and a former St. James administrator who was instrumental in the launch and growth of St. James Academy.

And for our side of it to pair up with not only Bogie Golf (Curt Whigham and Lucas Bartlett, but also, Robeck's (STA alum, Cole Friedman) just highlights the community involved in just one soccer match.

And this became quite a soccer match. We came out like gangbusters (well, after they took the opening attack and missed one off the post). We went up 1-0 ten minutes in, cashing deadball one off a throw-in. About 10 minutes later we went up 2-0 as Laws put it in one off the free kick. But we gave up just an awful goal five minutes later, to get the score much closer at 2-1.

But seven minutes before half, Cooper lofted one of his patented deadballs for a Miles Law header to put us up 3-1 at half. And that included Nate's ball off the post just before halftime. I had thought we had played a solid half, giving up one bad goal.

We ran into stamina problems in the second half; the heat had gotten to us, and we went deep into the bench, and we got great performances from Maverick Farrar in goal, Noah Morgan at the "6," and Brody Seibert at the "9." So despite giving up two goals we were able to limp into overtime.

And in overtime we were very good, dominant. We could have won the match twice before we won the match. We scored on yet another free kick, this one from Cooper to the General.

Sudden Victory. Then the presentation of the Clevinger-Cobb trophy.

But St. James is the real deal. They are not going to lose many. We will look back at this win later in the season as a great win. And by the way, give me a ballot now, for I am checking the name Ediger.
