810 Showcase

Game 13: 7-6-0
7 October vs. KC East @ Saint Thomas Aquinas in the 810 Showcase (4-2)

It was a bit smaller than normal, but it was quite an entertaining 810 Showcase. Park Hill South upset BV Southwest in the first match in OT, 3-2. Rockhurst broke away late in the first half against Bishop Miege to win 5-1, and we took down a very talented East squad, 4-2.

This is definitely a match we would have lost a couple of weeks ago. The East squad is loaded with technical, talented players; we were going to have to score some goals to win this match.

And with Muck's return to the lineup Tuesday, and with his second match today we have put in 9 goals, 4.5 goals per match. The rest of the year we were averaging just under 2 goals per match.

He got us started today with another assist to Liam. Liam returned the favor on this rather rewatchable corner kick where Liam pops a ground cross up and over the keeper to the back post for the Muck finish. Brilliant.

We pushed the lead to 3-1 early in the second half with a nice goal that went from Befort to Muck to Nate.

But about midway through the second half, we were under a steady attack as East abandoned any sort of build and just kept lobby balls into our back third; it took some great defending to keep them out of the net.

With about 12 left the Bears pushed a ball through to create a 1 v 1 with Farrar. He came out perfectly to snuff the breakaway, but, somehow, the ball slides underneath him for an easy goal.

We added a center midfielder to help defend the back third, but East got some quality opportunities anyway.

Without Liam second goal with just under 8, we might well have headed to OT.

Our second half attack lacked our attacking the width as we had zero corners added to the score sheet.

As we have seen in earlier matches, that constant middle attack leads to pickoffs and subsequent counter attacks, especially as we tire.

East can put quite a team out there, a team that owned the possession stats against us and that made our defense constantly work.

It was our 4th straight win, leading us into Senior Night, Tuesday, and our final week of regular season soccer.

STATS:

First Half:

Saints: Shots: 5 (5) EG: 3 Corners: 3 (Ryan 2, Janeway)

32:16 Ryan (Muck runs the 2-minute drill to set Liam up for the nice finishl)

13:06 Muckerman (Welsh hits a grounder to the front post for Liam to flick up and over the keeper to the back post for the finish)

Bears: Shots: 3 (2) EG 3 Corners: 0

30:10 Byoke (Dunia chips it into the box and the direct kick; we fumble it into a tap-in)

Second Half:

Saints: Shots: 4 (3) Corners: 0

35:13 Lebourveau (just a great goal that begins with a Laws throw-n that Liam wins and keeps in bounds to it the hard cross that Befort recovers to pass it forward to Muck who flicks it to Nate)

7:31 Ryan (Welsh's long free kick gets cleared back to Ragan for the one-touch hit that Ryan finishes)

Bears: Shot: 13 (7) EG: 6 Corners: 2

12:44 Itonga (this goal suggest a complete defensive failure all over the field (as counters frequently do) ending up with the ball on Twisermana foot to push forward as Maverick slides for the save, but the ball scoots out from under him for an easy finish. (We do see that huge gap again between or defense and the rest of the team).
