EKL/5A Showdown
Game 6: (2-4)
14 September vs. Southwest at Saint Thomas Aquinas (2-3)
Game number six gave us a pretty good reading of where we are. Our record is not great, but we have been playing well overall, needing to put some numbers in the victory column. Now, we did not move one to the victory column, but we played well once again, sort of.
Southwest came in second in the EKL and one of the teams who can win a 5A state championship. We played without one of our starting "6's," and we were not able to use our normal rotation because of a few other disciplinary circumstances. But we accounted for all that pretty well, bringing up Owen Kitts from JV, along with Noah Morgan and Jacob Zinkus, and starting Abi Yibekal at the "10." Adi, Jacob and Noah gave us good minutes, and Owen was a major contributor.
We ended up losing the match with 33 seconds left on the clock. The T-wolves finished their second PK of the night as we battled the last 10 minutes playing once again with 10 players against their 11.
And as well as we played, we embarrassed ourselves tonight; it is one thing to play hard, to play with the passion we showed to come back from two down to tie the match up with over thirty-three minutes to go. Just wonderful.
But it is another thing not to be able to play with a discipline that does not allow passion to spill over into bad tackles and constant jawing at the officials. We represent a school, a program, our families, and all that have come before us. And we did a very poor job of that tonight.
Honestly, I don't believe I have ever coached a team that has racked up 3 red cards and eighteen yellow cards in a season, much less in six games. And as a team we will figure out how to stop this nonsense—it negates how hard and how well we have played.
This team has a unique gift to give its all, to battle to the very end with all it has; however, there is a part of that spirit that has to remain in check, to remain calm in the midst of that storm.
We must grow as a team from the absurd ending to this match.
