EKL: Game 3
Game 7: (2-5-0)
19 September vs. Bishop Miege at Saint Thomas Aquinas (1-2 2OT)
We had a difficult match tonight against perennial 4A State Champ, Bishop Miege. And Miege had been cooking in the EKL already with wins over Blue Valley and BV North, North's being an 8-0 crushing.
We also played without starting centerback, senior, John Winerich, and our starting "10," junior Spencer Ragan. We did welcome back, defensive center midfielder, Alex Bissen who has been battling an illness for a couple of weeks.
And I would say on the defensive side of the ball we were pretty solid with the exception of the winning goal, but our attack was pretty AWOL. We continued to give the ball away in the front third of the field and then have to race back to defend.
Even though we continue to take too many touches before we release the ball, we did lead 1-0 at the half, feeling pretty good about the defensive side of the ball.
Fairly early in the second half we allowed a long throw-in that resulted in a corner where we headed it down into the box for one Miege player who somehow pokes a second touch through our 6-man zoned box and passed our keeper.
That was enough to keep Miege tied with us for the rest half. We spent about 5 minutes towards the end of the half pummeling the goal, but in the end we got countered, only to save a breakaway with what was whistled as a red-card tackle. They missed the PK wide, so we played on into overtime.
So there we were again, playing ten against 11. We were able to stretch the game into the second overtime, but they finally broke us down to score fairly easily to end the match.
We were a bit unlucky not to score in that flurry around their goal where Adi even hits a rocket headed for inside the back post where Miege has a wingback planted for the clear, but we are all too familiar with playing a man down with a few minutes to go to lose in OT.
Miege played well, scoring two nice goals. It was a great high school soccer match that we just ended up on the wrong end of.
STATS:
First Half:
Saints: Shots: 7 (5) Corners: 1 (Welsh)
11:03 Janeway (Befort hits a great diagonal ball across for a Reboulet shot off the keeper save for a sliding Janeway: just a great goal!)

Second Half:
Saints: 4 (1) Corners: 1(Janeway)
Stags: Shots: 5 (3) Corners: 2
32:33 Bealmear (Green's corner gets headed down by us into the box for a second touch)
OT:
2OT 7:25 Bergfeld (the winning goal comes out of our own goal kick as we have trouble getting the ball out and wide thus starting the central attack that goes to Green who turns and splits our back line that lacks any tertiary coverage)
