Back at The Rock after they go back-to-back

Game 2: 31 August, 2023 (at Rockhurst) EKL Standings 2023 STATS We knew this would be a tall task with Rockhurst  virtually  bringing their whole team back from their back-to-back state title wins.  We were hoping our what-was-thought-to-be the strength of our team, our defense, would look far better than it did in the first match against St. James. With our strarting goalie out from an injury in the St. James game, freshman keeper, Parker Lehn, was set for an early varsity debut against one of our, if not the, best opponents on our schedule.  We played very, very well tonight, falling 2-1 with the clock at 1:11. I was so proud of our play, especially our defense throughout the match. We played a 3/4's press and the boys stayed very disciplined, eliminating most of the passing lanes, stepping up to win ball after ball.  Weinrich and Welsh at centerback could not have played better—they were so good. And both Parker and Maverick played pretty darn well for s...

25 August 2023, vs. St. James Academy (4-3 in OT) Game 1: (1-0-0) EKL Standings 2023 STATS Huge shoutout to Varsity Assistant Coach and Advancement Director, Tim Zande, as he took over the reigns to the planning and execution of our Opening Match and its big-time fundraiser from BWhite. What an event! This event is already special in that it honors Perter Clevinger and Aaron Cobb two former Saint Thomas Aquinas soccer greats, but tonight's charity portion of the match raises monies for charities in the name of John Whigham (I Am ALS), the head of a great Saint Thomas Aquinas soccer family and Mark Huppe, a former Saint Thomas Aquinas teacher and coach, and a former St. James administrator who was instrumental in the launch and growth of St. James Academy. And for our side of it to pair up with not only Bogie Golf (Curt Whigham and Lucas Bartlett, but also, Robeck's (STA alum, Cole Friedman) just highlights the community involved in just one soccer match. And this became quite ...

Game 0: 3-0 vs. Non-Starters Overall the starters played pretty darn well, scoring 3 goals and not allowing any. We still need to make use of our "9" way more—some of that is on Liam who needs to make more diagonal runs to create space for himself and others. We generated plenty of corners (10) and executed them well. We have played against one another enough; it time to see what we have got against an opponent.   STRiPEOUT is two days away. Shift One: Shots: 3 (1) EG: 2  Corners Created: 3 (Janeway, Ryan, LeBorveau) 7:36 Weinrich (Ragan bends in the corner for a chest down and quick shot) Shift Two: Shots: 5 (2) EG: 3 Corners: Ryan 2, Laws 2:33 Ragan   (Cooper hits the deep shot off the keeper for a Weinrich Vermese pass to Spencer) Shift 3: Shots: 2 (1) Corners Created 1: (Adi) Shift 4: Shots: 2 (1) Corners: 2 (Laborveau, Ryan) 5:00 Bjsoreth (Cooper bends Smash left and tight)

Preseason Take for Year 36 of Saint Thomas Aquinas Boys' Soccer

Swinging for State Tho' much is taken, much abides; and Tho' we are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven,  that which we are, we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, But strong in will to Strive, to seek to find and not to yield.                          -Tennyson, "Ulysses." Many times throughout the year, Coach Hammons, my 30-year, varsity assistant coach will send me something that just rings true at the right moment. I think it was mid-July after we had completed our camps and our summer workouts, I got this excerpt from Tennyson's famous work, "Ulysses." Yes, we did graduate a boatload of great soldiers who battled to plant the shield firmly at the top at the end of the season. All-Staters, Barrett Kitts , Ethan Young , Anthony Consuegra and Gabe Garcia —and their fine goalkeeper, Andrew Seger are all gone. And it seemed that they could move "...
